Everyone always raves about this book...when I finally read it, it was interesting, but at the end I didn't think "Wow, that was truly amazing." It was just okay.

I really enjoyed this story about friendship and growing up. My kids read this in elementary school, but I never got around to reading it until now, even though I always meant to. Stanley Yelnats is the fifth (I think) generation of Stanley Yelnats and his family seems to be under a curse that began with his great great grandfather who apparently stole a pig. This story follows two timelines--the first is the timeline of his great great grandfather, although it focuses on Kissing Kate Barlow and the mystery of what happened to her. The second timeline is on present day Stanley when he is sent to a reform camp for a crime he did not commit. He is treated harshly (although not necessarily more harshly than the rest of the kids) and the camp has them mysteriously digging holes for something. While Stanley is being punished for something he did not do, I like that he grows and learns from it, and he ends up as a much more likable person than he began (he didn't even like himself at the beginning of the story). At the same time, he and Zero end up becoming good friends as they each learn from each other. I very much enjoyed this story and although the ending was a tad fairy tale, I was still cheering for them. I thought this was an excellent story for older elementary schools with lots of lessons to be learned, including taking one step at a time when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds.

This book is worth reading. It's dark and sorta gummy, like 3-minute old Hubba-Bubba. You wanna keep chewing 'cause you got a feeling there's more flavor in there...and you can sorta taste it...but at the end it just makes your jaw sore.

But it was fun to chew while it lasted.

Mr. Judd told me I should read this book in the 5th grade. Love the story, love the movie.

I was reading this aloud to my kids but they lost interest so I had to finish it myself. Be prepared to discuss racism if your kids read this book.
