I love how the story has many different layers, depending on how much meaning you give the different moments in the story. It can be an adventure, but it is also a reflection on imagination, and I feel it was quite relevant to myself. However, many of those deeper meanings come up once and are let go, and I wish there was more exploration of it.
On the other hand, the book sometimes feels like a never ending story, getting very long and dragging on less relevant aspects.

3.5, but rounding up. The first half of the book is great. There is a sense of urgency and conflict. If you’ve seen the first movie, it roughly covers the first half. Some interesting characters, great world building, really good flow. I really enjoyed it.

The second half… stretched on a little too long. Ende created a beautiful and diverse world, which is fun to read about. But… the conflict just didn’t feel as urgent and it felt like he was just kept writing down idea after idea and didn’t know when to stop. You’ll also recognize some similarities with the second movie (although the movie definitely took a lot of liberties, which may have been a good thing).

The ending was very satisfying, though, so definitely worth reading until the end.
