The characterization is very strong, but the plot is awkward, and too clever by half.

I couldn't finish this book. It was too wordy. If it takes two paragraphs to describe something that could easily be described in two sentences... it's not for me.
I was really looking forward to reading this after reading some of the reviews... but I just couldn't get into it.

4.5 stars.

The Lies of Locke Lamora was so close to five stars for me, however it was missing something, I am not sure what but it was certainly missing in my opinion.

I absolutely loved this book so much. Despite the fact it is adult fantasy, heavy topics and over 500 pages I literally flew through this book. I found it very easy to sit and fly through 100 pages each time I picked the book up. There was literally so much going on, I found it very difficult to put down when I needed to. I always found myself wanting to know what happened next.

The characters were literally some of my favourite characters of all time. Locke, Jean, Calo, Galdo, Bug and Nazca are a few that stick in my mind. I love the sarcasm and the banter that they have but also how united they are. They are such good friends and would do anything for each other and you can really see that.
Spoiler I absolutely love that Scott Lynch is not afraid to kill off our favourite characters. Yes that is a weird comment to make. But it makes me enjoy a story more when plot points occur with characters that make sense and it isn't just a "they all lived happily ever after" scenario that doesn't make sense but might suit the reader.

The plot was very fast paced, it did move back and forth between time periods, past and present which at times I found to be quite difficult to follow. It is definitely a book you need to be in the right frame of mind for. I found myself lost at times and had to go back and realise what time period we were in. However, that is my only criticism. This book was so good and I am anxiously awaiting the time that I can pick the next book up.

this book was quite good. the non linear storytelling worked quite well with the complex and interwoven plot, revealing information at the right times to clarify some things and further confuse others. all the characters were compelling and well motivated. the world building was fun and interesting while not being the main goal. the world was slowly brought into view at a pace that made sense and didn’t leave me wanting anything deeper. it is nice to have a fantasy like this very grounded in the reality of life. not just of physics or complex reasoning, but making the world and the people in it make sense intuitively and feel like a real world. i enjoyed reading this book greatly.

I really wish I loved it, but I didn’t, although I'd still recommend it in the hope it would click for others where it didn’t click for me.

i loved the first half, but you lost me when you introduced
that bird mage or something that was completely overpowered, with little to no hints or foreshadowing that people that powerful existed in this world.
I think I wouldve enjoyed it better if it stayed as a fun yet chaotic con game
