TW: Medical abuse, rape, sexual abuse

This was gorgeous and devastating. One of the things I love about Miller’s work is how in grounding mythology in a pragmatic reality the subtext becomes text. The brutal reality of being a woman literally created by a man resonates deeply and reflects the harrowing reality of women’s relationships with men.

Ruth Wilson’s narration was (as always) beautifully nuanced, breathing life into Galatea.

I love Madeline Miller and her exploration of the overlooked feminine characters in Greek mythology. After reading Circe and The Song of Achilles, I knew I had to read this one as well. I do wish I had explored the story of Galatea and Pygmalion more before reading this short story. I got so much more out of it having read the “Afterward” and doing some more exploration on my own. I think it would have been a more impactful reading experience having this knowledge going in.
•
Miller’s writing is absolutely stunning, as always. I love how she (quite literally in this case) gives a voice to the voiceless characters in her work. The final scene in this one is so powerful and vividly stands out in my mind. I also found the exploration of Galatea’s various identities very interesting and important. We see her through the lenses of an individual, woman, wife, and mother. I found her almost desperate need to protect her daughter and other girls/women at all costs incredibly real and emotional.
•
I do wish this had been fleshed out into an entire book. I felt like with more depth, it could have been extremely powerful.

Although it is brief and slightly one-dimenosional, it is a heartbreaking about narcissistic abuse and a feminist reimagining of the “Pygmalion” myth is always welcomed.

It is difficult to rate and review this short story because of its length. The writing we get is beautiful, the story succinct and sad. It brought a tear to my eye.

I love Miller’s style, voice, and the way she brings myths to life. I’m a sucker for a queer, feminist retelling. She’s one of my top two favorite fiction writers. I was able to read this in one sitting, which was moving and refreshing all at once, but I’d love to see a collection of short stories like this.
