In alternating perspectives, our cast grows and shrinks.
The characters are well written. The book shows many of the different arguments/reasoning/stories without drowning out plot A or disrupting the collective pace of the story. The characters feel like real people, with real connections. While there is a crush and romantic connection, it never once cuts into the action. It only presents itself as a motive: a catalyst for an even and consistent amount of the story. The ending is realistic while still having a satisfying conclusion.
The Shusterman authors worked to gether to create a compelling dystopian story much in the same way George Orwell worked time and time to do. They wrote the book with a message. However, instead of creating an atmosphere of hopelessness, the Shustermans help to build a future, to show the fall out of if and when disaster passes. They don't water down (ha) the message, the importance, or the level of disaster, but they leave the reader with an enjoyable story. It's believable, even if extreme in nature.Â

There are things good about this book. I liked that the kids had to face decisions that made them âmonstersâ and how they dealt with that. I like the way stories interconnected. I like that the drought brought out the actual core of people making the good even better, pushing them to make the right choice.Â

REVIEW
Ever read a book that just founds a permanent space in your head, even when youâre not reading, even when youâve finished it? Over my book nerd years, I found some, and for me, thatâs always the sign of a good book! Dry is a part of this list, and you might have already guessed, it was a book I really enjoyed!
Although Dry is categorized as a science fiction and futuristic dystopian novel, I would say that it feels like neither. In fact, the story it tells could very easily happen tomorrow in some part of this world, and thatâs maybe the scariest part about it. Itâs daunting to imagine that what weâre reading could happen to us at any time!
I would say that although itâs a very accessible novel, as it is destined for young adults, it can probably get under your skin, whatever your age is. I found myself followed by this constant sense that something was wrong. Every time I opened the tap, every time I drank a glass of water, I had the most intrusive thoughts that the water wouldnât come out, that I should make that glass last. A sign of how much of an immersive experience this book is.
Although maybe peculiar, the characters felt very real to me, and one of my favourite aspects of this book was definitely how the authors explored human nature and how it changes when survival instinct kicks in. I felt like everything was very well done, not being too much considering the audience, but also not too little considering the message that needed to be passed.
Overall, I would say this was a very solid 4-star book, and if I was already curious to read Scythe, now I know Iâve got to do it! If you like dystopias and adventure books, I would definitely recommend this one to you!
Moderate: Murder, Blood, Death, Fire/Fire injury, Gun violence, Injury/Injury detail, Medical content, Sexual assault, Suicidal thoughts, Violence, and Police brutality

I think I would have had a different experience reading this if I had read it before our own generation's disaster time. After the pandemic though it feels though it makes some things much more mild or unrealistic. Like waiting a couple of hours to go to the store. I know now for a fact that if there was even a whisper of any shortage the public would make it a million times worse by preemptively buying it all out.Â
