I hadn't even heard of this book until I found out Neal and Jarrod Shusterman were doing a talk and signing for it two blocks from my apartment. While I love the Arc of a Scythe books, I've never read any of Neal's other work. But this sounded fascinating, and I picked it up. Which was a fantastic idea, because it's a REALLY GOOD (and also deeply uncomfortable) read. Sort of a combination disaster/apocalypse novel, it follows four characters through the days after Southern California has it's water shut off entirely. How far will they go for themselves, their loved ones, and each other to survive? I enjoyed it immensely, couldn't put it down once I started. The writing flowed together so well I found it extremely difficult to pinpoint where one writer ended and the other began. Bonus points for extremely good characters!! Even the not-so-good ones were extremely well drawn and engaging. I never started one section wishing it would end so I could get back to a different character's POV, and that's rare.

A realistic "thriller"? It's the story of how a community interacts and reacts in a situation of emergency: no drinkable water. O_O

3.5/5 stars
I really enjoyed the story and the dystopian setting, it was so hard for me to stop reading I needed to know the end.

I didn’t completely like the characters and their story line, I wasn’t really attached to them but the plot made them more accurate.

I won’t give it a 4/5 stars though because of the *spoiler*

Happy ending vibe at the end.. everything is wrong and it seems that they will never make and suddenly it shifts to an happy ending story.. the water crisis is done and everything is fine. This was a big NO for me and I was really disappointed by that, I wish they had worked more on the ending and made it more realistic...

But overall this was a good read, I enjoyed it and I was touched by the problems showed here and the dystopian world, this book made me think a lot and that it why I liked it a lot.

This book is straight up gritty. Also it made me want to squirrel water away in my closet.

3.75 stars.

A timely read as the day i picked this one up, there was an article about how the water levels in the Colorado River are at all time lows.
An intriguing cast of characters that showed how different people reacted to the sudden loss of water and access to water in CA due to extreme draught conditions, and poor planning for the distribution or resources.

I did feel that it came to a sudden end, and all the story lines came to a nice tidy end. Which it is why it is not quite a 4 star read.
