ughhh okay i love wylie he needs more PAGE TIME and i love the twins and i HATE KEEFE AND FITZ and because of the stupid fucking love triangle they get so much page time. spoiler sophie: they both suck! the way half the cast of characters disappears every book because there’s ten million main characters and half of them become irrelevant all the time is soo fun. i still love this world but it starts to drag on!

Okay so I can rant about this book for ages but I’ll spare you the time. Firstly, it drags on for too long. So long that I had so many questions for why such specific details were needed. Secondly, it focused so so so much on Fitz and Sophie. And don’t get me wrong, I love me some romance but it was too much. I wished Sophie focused on defeating the Neverseen rather than on Fitz. About 1/3 of the book was solely on that relationship. Phew that’s all out. ✌🏽

Okay, I get that this book was a setup for Fitzphie, but let’s be real here: did we need a THIRD of an 800+ page book to only be about two main characters recovering in a hospital after an enemy attack?? I mean, my god, I wanted to pull my own eyelashes out too!

The ending was also irritating because Sophie FINALLY feels comfortable with her feelings and that ending will just freak her tf out and make sure she’s self-conscious and feel like an “outsider” the rest of her millennia life I mean come ON.

I’m annoyed.

Also: Y’all THREATENED my sweet baby Queen and King Glitter Butts Silveny and Greyfell this will NOT BE TOLERATED I’m sitting here super excited to finally see my favorite neurotic alicorn and she DARES to be POISONED HOW DARE YOU I stg if those babies and those babies’ babies get hurt…

* DETAILED SPOILERS AHEAD AND OPINIONS*
Finished January 16th, 2023

So that was a lot. And I mean A LOT. This is my second time reading this, and boy, was that a journey. This was 4.5 stars, since it didn't really exceed my expectations, and wasn't as thrilling as the other books. Despite that, I was at the edge of my seat the whole time, as well as on my nerves at times. But, for the record, despite Fitzphie being a thing NOW, I'm still team Keefe. I ship Sokeefe until I die, and that WILL NOT change. No offense, just saying. Respect to you Fitzphie shippers, but I love Keefe with all my heart, he's the best person for Sophie, and NO ONE can convince me otherwise.

First and foremost, I'll focus on the big confession between Fitz and Sophie. I clearly remember reading this part, but, I just don't like it. Remember, Sophie didn't feel comfortable at first at this prospect with Fitz, and there's a reason that Silveny so conveniently interrupted their almost-kiss. That pretty much confirms that Silveny is team Sokeefe as well. Also, Silveny automatically took a liking to Keefe when she saw him with Sophie. She doesn't seem enthusiastic about Fitz, does she? Something to note as well is that they didn't automatically go straight to dating. They first entered that awkward transition, and then Sophie finally admitted that Fitz is her boyfriend. But, really, their relationship just doesn't FEEL right. I don't have any other way of explaining it. Fitz is a great friend, he has helped her in difficult situations, but, he's STILL not her go-to for all instances. Fitz even pointed it out when they were in the healing center that Sophie tends to tell Keefe more things then her cognate, Fitz, who she should be telling everything to.

Instinctively, Sophie always go to Keefe, BECAUSE she doesn't have that kind of relationship with Fitz. Subconsciously, she trusts Keefe more then Fitz. She might not know that in her head, but in her heart, she does. She's a naturally oblivious person, even to her own emotions. Also, keep in mind that Fitz only started liking her at Alluveterre, where, coincidentally, Sophie and Keefe were spending more time together.

You know what probably happened? He got JEALOUS of Sophie and Keefe. Also, Keefe has started showing signs her liked her since Exile, when they were starting to get closer. The thing is, what Fitz doesn't understand, and may never will is that Sophie and Keefe have a sort of relationship where they're not shy to share their ongoing issues and burdens. They rely on each other to help each other through those difficult situations, and always instinctively turn to each other. Not only that, Keefe also just KNOWS Sophie better. Because she CAN'T hide ANYTHING from him. Remember, he has said countless times, and it's been proved that he knows her and her feelings better than ANYBODY. Even the Fitzter.

Also, the extra pov by Keefe titled "The Talk" reveals his true feelings, but also how selfish and petty Fitz and his father are. Alden only wants the best for his son, Fitz, BUT, he's basically saying to Keefe that:"I know how you feel about Sophie, but my son deserves her more than you, so just let them be happy". Doesn't that sound ridiculous? He even said that he was in the same boat as Keefe was, and said that he will find his one. Because no. Just NO! How could you just cast someone's hopes away? He's basically disregarding Keefe's feelings for his son, and that is just universally not okay, and just straight up petty and selfish.

He even tried to manipulate him by saying that he sees him as a son, but he should just wait for his chance. I was also really appreciating how Alden was there as a father figure for Keefe when his father, Cassius, was abusing him and not being proud of his son. That was honestly heart-warming. I think I cried a bit. I don't doubt that Alden sees him as a son, I like that dynamic, but USING that for your son is kind of selfish. Everyone should have an equal chance. Let Sophie decide what she wants. Yes, she has had her crush on Fitz for quite a while, but she was blinded by his looks. I know they've spent more time together, but, Sophie kept that secret for a reason.

And now that ending, that's actually scary. She's unmatchable. Now imagine how Fitz is going to react. Just imagine. He only wanted her name on his lists. And now she can't even get a match packet? He's going to want to throw things. And probably part of the reason that it said that was because she doesn't know her genetic parents are. She has 2 sets that she knows of, but the ones that matter, she doesn't know. Hopefully she finds out who her biological parents are.

Now the first half of the book Sophie and Fitz spent in the healing center. They were recovering from their accounts with shadowflux, which came from Umber, who was the Neverseen's shade. In the end we discover that she died, from the troll newborns trampling her on top of the door that fell on her. She caused the echos that haunted both Sophie and Fitz. In Sophie, it was in her hand, her arm, but mainly her head. She saw the monster, which was basically the echos, taking shape into something she could understand. In Fitz, it was his chest and leg , but mainly his heart that got affected. He experienced pain from the echos in his heart whenever he had a sudden outburst. They both took a while to recover, but they eventually, with weeks on bed rest, did.

Something that I really liked when they were on bed rest was how Sophie and Keefe practiced skills, and each time he came over, he brought over a box of prattles, where he gave her the collectible pins to put on her bandages. Like that was really adorable! The Fitzter can NOT make up for that. The thought and effort Keefe made to even giving them names made it even better, and added a bit of the Keefe charm we all know and love!

Now into the main plot of the book. Before we get there, we got to clarify that Sophie now has 5 bodyguards, and everyone of them is amazing! They each helped her in their own way, even Nubiti, even if we didn't see her, Sophie did say that she was probably protecting Sophie from under the ground. The ballad of Bo and Ro is just *chef's kiss*.
That was one thing that I will NEVER get bored of. We need more verses, because I don't think their love story has begun yet! Like, Keefe, you better be making verses EVERYDAY! I could read 500 pages of the Ballad of Bo and Ro written by Keefe Sencen and co-authored by Sophie Foster and never get bored. I could see it. Hope we see more from that.

I personally LOVE Ro, like, I can't even describe how much I adore her. She doesn't not only have an amazing personality, amazing humor and sass, and is an amazing warrior, SHE SHIPS SOKEEFE! IT'S CANON GUYS! I mean it's always been canon, but to have it confirmed is something else. She kept hinting at the conversation between Keefe and Alden in the later chapter, like when Keefe came to sadly say to Sophie (and my heart broke for him here because like he obviously had a long-lasting crush on Sophie, but just when HE was about to confess MULTIPLE times in Nightfall, Fitz just so happens to beat him to it. And knowing how this is breaking Keefe's heart because he doesn't want to hold onto this any longer, but doesn't want to ruin it for his best friend Fitz- and-

I love this series so much! The number of pages in this book may seem intimidating but it is such a fast read once you get sucked into the story.
