My son loved it, he was particularly impressed by Struwwelpeter himself with the long nails and the unruly hair.

Läskig och ruskig bok. Perfekt för den som vill läsa en gammal skräckberättelse som man berättade för barn. Lärorik, intressant och skrämmande.

I grew up with this rhymed and illustrated children’s book about Struwwelpeter (Shockheaded Peter). It consists of several cautionary tales with grotesque consequences, meant to prevent children from doing ‘wrong’ and dangerous things. I’ve always had a grisly fascination with this book, which was first published in 1845!

Äußerst interessant, was unsere Eltern uns früher vorgelesen und was ich als Kind so geliebt habe. Wo es doch eigentlich nichts als schreckliche Horrorgeschichten sind: Daumen abgeschnitten, verhungert, vom Wind weggeweht, abgebrannt... Aber die Geschichten in Gedichtform sind wunderbar lustig, heutzutage, manche traurig. Doch immer irgendwo schockierend, bis auf die eine, die sehr viel Moral hat auf die GUTE und nicht erschreckende oder gruselnde Art: Die Geschichte vom Mohr, dem schwarzen Jungen, der ausgelacht wurde. Die war echt gut, moralisch sehr wertvoll. :D Und tada: Es kam niemand zu Tode. :D Nein, aber ernsthaft: Ich hatte nach 20 Jahren (26) immer noch Spaß mit dem Buch, dabei ist es für Kindergartenkinder gedacht. War schön, mal wieder einen Blick in die eigenen ersten paar Jahre zu werfen und das zu lesen, was mitunter das erste war, das man gehört/gelesen hatte. Ob ICH es meinen Kindern vorlesen würde... fraglich. Da sind mir die verharmlosten Grimm Märchen lieber, wobei die auch alle insgeheim grausam sind. Aber da fällt es nicht ganz so auf. (;

Overall dealt with many common childhood challenges, such as sucking ones thumb, racism, watching where one is walking and even hygiene. Teaches many good morals still relevant today with scary pictures sure to intimidate the child reader. One that could easily be added to a classroom library.

Another classic for children's literature from a German author. This is also a book that I read when I was a child and just rediscovered again a few weeks ago. Still nice and refreshing, though the stories are a little too short for my taste.
