I had high expectations for this book but it just wasn’t for me. I enjoyed the simplistic writing style but this novel didn’t keep my attention.

It baffles my mind how this book has both won a Nobel Prize and been added to nearly every "Must Read" list. The lack of character development, dull story, and choppy writing style all made for a terribly disappointing reading experience. I find that some people believe it's "cool" to describe a book as "philosophical" and "deep." Such must be the case with The Stranger.

Though I have long associated Camus with the philosophy of life's banality and with someone who put to writing feelings and moralities of existentialism, I never really read any of his works. I found The Stranger's narrative to be poignant, simple, yet brutal. A lot of questions permeate the pages beyond just despair and hopelessness of meaning -- how do we define ourselves and how do others (society) define us? Why even bother defining? Death binds us together and yet we fear it. These are interesting, unanswerable questions that nevertheless deserve time to contemplate. For this, The Stranger delivers.
