I had to consistently remind myself that it was a young adult book. After reading a much better Cinderella story in the form of "Confessions of a Wicked Stepsister", Ash felt lacklustre in comparison. The twist and the change to the original fairytale is basically the substitution of one character for another while the rest remains unchanged. It just Cinderella with different words and if I wanted to read that, I'd just reread Ella Enchanted.

If I'm truly honest, I think I only made it to the end of this book because of the lesbian love interest. It's nice to see representation. I did enjoy the character of the Huntress Kaisa. She was really interesting, and the incorporation of a fairy world rather than the fairy god mother was a really nice touch. However, I just don't think I connected to the writing style. Don't get me wrong, it's a good read and enjoyable enough; it just could have been so much better.

Honestly, this one was between a so-so and a pick. I think I just mentally hyped it up to much and it didn’t live up to my expectations. The story felt fast paced at times and I didn’t always know what was going on. 3.5⭐️.

in this cinderella retelling, our main character ash is consumed with grief and can only find solace in the tales her mother once told her. as she develops a relationship with the huntress kaisa, she starts to feel she has something to live for. but the dangerous fairy sidhean has already claimed her…will she be able to follow true love in the end?

this was a good book, but unfortunately i was underwhelmed by it. it’s hard to place my finger on exactly where it went wrong for me, but i think in general more ideas could have been expanded upon. like, the relationship between ash and kaisa was cool, but felt underdeveloped by me.

i will read more malinda lo books because i absolutely adored last night at the telegraph club.
