I loved this book. It was thought provoking and while it was a touch sad, I really love the idea of literature being so incredibly valuable, you'd lay your life on the line to devour it.

I was excited to read this book but honestly I didn’t love it. It took me so long to read it because it just drags on in my opinion. I also don’t really like either of the guys much (I do like the little seamstress) so it wasn’t that enjoyable for me.

There are some wonderful scenes in this novel that are so well fashioned that they remain as perfect pictures long after you've finished reading: the fixing of the local headman's teeth; diving for keys beside a waterfall; the bull's blood incident... I think what prevented me from enjoying this book more is that it felt very ephemeral; as soon as I was fully immersed in the world, it was over.
