Here's a bias of mine: when characters are offered something wonderful (a great job, nice digs, diamond necklace, free cruise, etc.) and turn it down, because they're simple folk who would rather wallow in the mud with their honest realness. Drives me bonkers. It seems a huge slap in the face to actual poor people who would likely embrace such a deal with open arms, from an author who is probably not homeless and has a good, working bathroom.

So Connwaer irritates me off-the-bat when, true-to-form, he rejects everything (and I think we're supposed to assume he's noble or something). I keep waiting for the scene where he despairs of his rejection and bitterly regrets his foolish, proud decision, but nothing quite like that comes.

The series as a whole never lived up to the first volume, which charmed me thoroughly. I'd recommend reading the first, and imagining it as a one-off, and moving on to other novels.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).

Aw... that ending. Sniffle. Just perfect. Highly recommend the series. It is good for the heart.

I typically have a horrible time with the final book in a series, but this one is well conceived and well executed! It is full of action, but brings the main character, Conn the gutterboy-turned-wizard, full circle at last. A book the whole family can enjoy!

The expression "quick hands" (used to describe picking a pocket, always in italics), "quick as sticks", and "sure as sure" occur so often in the text it's slightly annoying.

Once again an enjoyable read. It wasn't as good as the previous books though.

Should there be another book in this series I would definitely read it though!

4.5 stars. Just finished listening to this audiobook tonight and quite enjoyed it! The narrator does a fantastic job with all the different characters. Loved the little dragon Pip! I didn't remember an awful lot of details from the earlier books, but I was able to quickly get into this story. I loved the theme of home throughout and thought it was a great ending to the series!
