I picked this up because I've heard great things about the magic system. I'd say the book was cool overall, the magic system is indeed very unique and that's my jam. I did not care for the multifarious ways women's bodies were described and can totally understand why some readers would opt out for that reason. All in all this was a good read for me. I thought some of the twists were interesting and I enjoyed the intrigue behind certain characters. It may not have blown me out of the water but it was a solid fantasy to me nevertheless.

The casual misogyny and unnecessary bodily catalogues of the women in the story made this book hard to get through. I love the magic system and worldbuilding but I won't be continuing the series as I've been told the sexism continues throughout all of the books.

Absolutely riveting once we get past the out-spooling of how the magic system works but that goes on way too long.

The world tends towards grimdark but the characters are mostly people you can root for and the author gives us a few properly happy or poignant moments.

Hoping to like the next one even better.
