This just felt like a showcase of how screwed up an author could make a family. It bordered on ridiculous and read like bad reality tv. The language and behaviour surrounding some of the topics in this play made me think this was written in the 80s and I was shocked to find out the actual publication date. Finally, I absolutely hate when male authors write about the “female experience” and this was no exception.

Such a gripping play. I watched the film with Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep and found myself here. I couldn’t put it down. The conflict runs so deep, Letts writes about this intergenerational trauma so well. I think Ivy ended up being my favorite character. She has all the rage and hurt that Barbara does but doesn’t let it out. I enjoyed how complicated Barbara’s relationship is with Bill and the reflections of Violet in some of her outbursts. The entire play is devastating and sobering. I loved Charlie’s monologue in defense of little Charles: “I just can’t understand why folks can’t be respectful of one another. I don’t think there’s any excuse for it. My family didn’t treat each other that way.”

My first time reading this play in its entirety, as previously I only read a condensed version. It really gains momentum in acts 2&3 but has such a dry act 1. Some really great moments, and Barbara is such an amazing character. I can't get Meryl Streep out of my head when reading Violet, but again such an amazing character. The family tension and themes in this play are superb, but it takes too long to get into the meat of grief and story.
