Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book. While the author did a wonderful job with detailed descriptions, I found it to be too wordy and it dragged on. The first half of the book was confusing to me with jumbled timelines and narrators. I did finish it and found some endearing moments towards the end, but it was not a book that I looked forward to picking up each day.

I had to stop reading this because it didn’t catch my attention, at all. It was very hard to follow and I struggled with why the time frame was, it bounced back and forth from the “past” and “present”. I had heard such good things and was disappointed that it wasn’t as good as I had heard.

I found this book when browsing a bookstore in London. The cover caught my eye and the summary mentioned it was set partly in Alexandria, and I'd never read a book set there. After a lot of debating—it was a hardback and quite expensive—I ended up getting it, and I'm happy I did.
I went into it with only a vague idea of the plot that turned out to be very wrong; I thought the scarf found in the church meant the wife was somehow alive and had faked her death for mysterious reasons. Anyway, it turns out this book is literary fiction and deals beautifully with grief, faith, love and hope. The relationships between the characters were very interesting and well-written, and even the supporting cast of characters felt like fully fleshed out human beings. It's a bit slow but I found it engaging throughout and read most of it in a day.
