I was expecting this novel to be more of a traditional WWII historical romance with the characters looking back at their war time experiences etc, so I was surprised at the direction this novel took.  Having said that, I enjoyed it very much.  I think the setting of 1974 also added to the feeling that life was simpler, fewer distractions to get in the way of what was essentially a simple tale of love, grief and faith.  The setting meant there didn't need to be any unnecessary interruptions from cell phones, email etc, or even from superfluous characters.

Really enjoyed this author's writing style, very emotive and it truly felt she understood her characters
