This is a very dark, gothic addition to the growing His Dark Materials lore, but leaves you with more questions than answers.

Lovely short story, read by the perfect voice, IMHO Bill Nighy was born to read "slightly sooky supernaturalish" tales

There's lots left to the readers imagination here, I'd love to know more of the tales and travels of the objects. Though maybe the shortness of the tale is part of the appeal

Quick, atmospheric read, and a cool glimpse back into the world of His Dark Materials. Really made me want to reread the whole series.

This book was short and sweet. Anyone who like Pullman's work will love this book.

The plot was extremely interesting and unlike in most short stories, I genuinely was hooked.

This is a short story connected to the His Dark Materials trilogy. It’s more or less a conversation between two professors about a painting and a statue of a monkey. It was well written and intriguing, but it really left me wanting more. I think if this were a part of a short story collection it would have been fine, but on its own it didn’t work so well for me. I actually went and re-read the HDM trilogy because this reminded me how much I miss Philip Pullman's writing and world-building.
