Amazing and eye-opening book about the realities and devastation of alcoholism...a must read, esp. for women.

In a fit of perversity, I read this book while hungover from New Year's Eve. It taught me a LOT about the various forms alcoholism can take but simultaneously reassured me that I will never become an alcoholic myself. Worth a read - especially if you are a young, educated woman confused about life.

A vital read for anyone who wants to gain insight into alcoholism and what it's like to be an alcoholic. Knapp is an excellent writer, and her memoir has an elegance to it that doesn't sacrifice an ounce of honesty or insight. Heartbreaking, unflinching, and intent on getting to the truth behind the stories, this book is invaluable and not to be missed.

I loved this book!! I have loved more than one alcoholic in my lifetime and that was a large reason for me choosing this book. It was mentioned in another book that I read last year so I decided to give it a chance and I am so grateful that I did. My husband is a recovering alcoholic and I truly feel that I understand him a little better after reading this book. I found myself feeling so sympathetic for Caroline while reading this because I just pictured my husband. I read several pages to my husband and we both got emotional and he now wants to read it as well. I would recommend this book to anyone, but if you have a loved one or a significant other who has struggled with alcoholism then I recommend it even more!

Poignant, heart wrenching, and gloriously honest. This is the only book that has ever made me cry, and I cried buckets!

Another memoir to add to your list if your doing dry January or examining your relationship with alcohol. Knapps shares her vulnerability with her journey to quit drinking. The familiar tale of telling ourselves that we can just put limits on ourselves but it never works, Resonated with me. She also moves through the complicated relationships with family members and discusses the idea of who you need to be around certain people. How do you get confident to be your true self all the time? Her answer was to get sober and remain so. That is when you can identify yourself.

drinking is incredibly powerful; it made me examine parts of my life that had previously gone unexamined. regardless, when knapp informs you she's a columnist, it's unsurprising, because the book is written like a 300-page column.
