I don’t even know where to start with the myriad of things wrong with this series. I for the life of me do not understand why Claflin chose to make these books about mermaids!!!! I read the whole series out of morbid curiosity but they just got progressively more ridiculous.

Mermaids on motorcycles. Like what the actual f***? They also ride around in cars. How is this happening under water people???!! Please explain to me how an individual with a tail rides a motorcycle! And why??? What do they need motorcycles underwater! How are they running with a wet engine? Let's discuss a few things shall we?

Marra. Ok this girl is a hot mess. She’s spoiled and whiny. She allows herself to be bullied and only pushes back in immature outbursts that are either violent or ridiculous. The rest of the time she sulks. She also has no common sense. No one in her life has common sense either! For example...

The Band- Hey every time you get really into singing people pass out.
Also The Band- Wanna come sing with us at some bar? It’ll totally be fine.

Guy at Party- Wanna try some random drug you’ve never heard of? It’ll get you really high. It’s great!
Marra- Sounds a bit like cocaine....seems legit. Sure just let me get rid of my bf who’s trying to tell me unknown drugs are bad.
(Also how are you taking a powdered drug underwater????!!!! Please someone anyone just give me a hint!)

Can we talk about how everyone in this girls life is patronizing and selfish?

Marra- I’m overwhelmed with school.
Her fake Dad- Nah you’re fine, me and Stepmonster are giving you extra completely irrational advanced classes.

Marra- I’m overwhelmed and I don’t want to be queen.
Her real Dad- Nah you’re fine also I'm going to need you to kill me soon.

Marra- The kids at school hate me.
Bash- It’s fine wanna go get something to eat in the dining hall?

Marra- I’ve lived on land my whole life I don’t understand what’s going on.
Earwyn- Oh please you know all about everything you’re just stuck up.

Marra- I have to study and figure out this legend stuff.
Halen- Ok so what are you going to do with you’re hair? Try this dress on.

Marra- I’m a 1st yr student who’s never fought before.
Teacher- Good good so we'll team you with a 4th yr student in a 4th yr class. Also can you like win this competition against some guy who’s been fighting all his life so the school can have bragging rights?

Marra-Mom there’s so many issues with Dad being bats*** about this legend thing.
Her Mom- Oh honey your father’s such a sweet man. I love him.

Marra- I have so many questions about the Queen. Who could I even ask?
Her trident- Oh hey I can communicate with you and I used to belong to the queen.
Marra- Cool. So my hair changed colors, that's crazy right?

Nobody even remotely listens to this girl! To be fair she rarely says anything of substance anyways beyond complaining about how everyone hates her. And her parents.... all 3 of them are crazy! They all lie to her left and right. They neglect her. They ignore that she’s a minor. They drop bombshells all over the place then get genuinely confused when she gets upset. Her real dad was psychotically obsessed with some dead queen and no one thought it was weird that he tried to resurrect her from the dead to fulfill his teenage fantasy and impose it all on his daughter. I kept waiting for the part where she says “no Dad I’m giving up your dream”. (Also if there was a 500yr rule against talking about it then how were they all talking about it??!!!) Then there was the weird stomach pains? They were supposed to be because she was denying her powers but they were described like food poisoning or diarrhea and they happened twice towards the end. Like it was a last ditch effort to create some sort of physical urgency to the whole reincarnated queen drama.

I know I’ve already harped on the motorcycle bit but there was also the underwater press conference. Ummm ok they have underwater tv too? Or how about when her “eyes fill with tears”. Pray tell, how does one cry underwater? Perhaps it’s the same way one wears a full on ball gown underwater. Or wears glasses underwater. Or gets lost in a forest underwater. ( Swim up Girl. Just swim up)But she managed to come up with the concept of a “shellphone “ cause having a cellphone underwater? That’s just crazy!

This book could have had any supernatural setting to make it work. But instead Claflin chose the one element that wouldn’t work and ran with it anyways. I understand this is fantasy but the reason fantasy works is because there’s a little bit of reality rooted in it. This was just a sloppy storyboard. She could have at least had them living in a underwater bubble or something. The series was not bad if you close your eyes and make believe they aren’t doing impossible things underwater. Like the aforementioned MOTORCYCLES! Really I just can’t get past that. Like are they riding sidesaddle? Straddling their fins? Floating while holding the handlebars? Like for real y’all I’m stumped.

Anyways not a horrible trilogy just a completely illogical one.

Lovely NEW recently found family reunite. A father role fits but it exceeds the daddy role rightfully so.  It had a great ending all the way around. Took time to get to the final plot due to minor details and plot forming but it was worth waiting for. Fantasy, magical, turmoil, love, family and friendships form along with the royalty acceptance!!!  I wish there was book #4. ……………🙏🏾
