depressing…a prime example of it gets worse before it gets better. multi-layered for sure. mieko kawakami is brilliant.

This book was absolutely heartbreaking in the best possible way. A look at bullying from the eyes of a fourteen year old boy. In this story we see the why of the bullies as well as the why of why he just "accepts" the bullying.  Despite such a heavy topic it was an engaging read.

Maybe this was an issue with my expectations but as far as Japanese fiction I've read goes, this really wasn't anything. I didn't cre much for anything that happened. Theoretically I should've related, i was an amalgamation of strange combinations my small town has never seen and I was bullied for it. This didn't really hit anything for me though. It was a light breeze and all I remember from it is a metal elephant or whale or something in a park.
