I like this book if only for it being a vehicle to greater things. It establishes the Grishaverse that has only served to get better as time goes on. I will say that the vibes are continually a little off if only because of how weird the Black General is around Alina. I've always had an issue with age differences and this is no exception. There are certain instances in this book that I have literally highlighted in red and blue because Aleksander should go to jail. Alina is still a minor, so ew.

I think I would have enjoyed Shadow and Bone much more had I read it in high school. I found much of what happens to Alina to have been very convenient.  For example, any time she gets in trouble it quickly and easily gets resolved. I also found the Darkling grooming her to be a bit uncomfortable. As well, I found many of the characters to be standard stock characters and how Botkin was written felt a bit racist.

Fine. Make me your villain.

If you're a lifelong fantasy lover, you will thoroughly enjoy the Grishaverse. Shadow and Bone is a typical ya fantasy novel of the 2010s, but the Grisha magic system is so unique that it allows you to look past plot clichés. The villain, Darkling, is interesting, although his abusive "relationship" (if you can even call it that) with the MC is romanticised by the fandom often.

A good start to the series!
