Excellent book. Kept the whole family giggling all the way through. David Tennant’s narration was fantastic. Highly recommended!

Loved the movie. The book is a different beast that is markedly different from the movie plot. It has lots of humour and gross jokes that young children will appreciate. Plus dragons. But where was Astrid? Or, any female character for that matter. Zilch. The only reason I remove stars for this book is the lack of females with spine associated only with the movie.

The book features a lot of hand-drawn illustrations that are often funny. The illustrations break up the text on most pages which I'm sure would be a benefit for reluctant readers or children who find lots of text daunting.

Then, there is the audiobook. Narrated by David Tennant! Win! He's the perfect reader for this tale. Really, perfect. May have to listen to some more Hiccup and Toothless adventures because Tennant made the story better, for me.

Chapter 14 proves how accurate the movie franchise is when portraying Snotlout

Very neat story and fun time. Happy I picked it up, especially the audiobook because David Tennant reads it. Highly recommend.

3.5 stars, rounded up

This was a little odd to read and kind of funny. This being the movies' origin, I was expecting something different and wow did it deliver. Yet I could also pick out parts that clearly influenced and/or appeared in said movies, which was rather fun. It was also quite a bit more violent than I expected it to be! Still, it was entertaining and quick to get through.

I really enjoyed the movies when I watched them for the first time last year, I’ve been meaning to at least pick up the first book in the series to at least try it, and I’m glad I finally did. While I enjoyed it, I wasn’t quite prepared for how different it was from the movie! There were some elements that were the same, however it was still very different..and a little bit of a let down. But I did like it enough to go ahead and try and read the second book in the series. 3/5 Stars.
