This was an easy read but still good.

This book is deceptive. I nearly regretted buying it because the first few chapters seemed contrived and poorly written - but over the summer, I had nothing better to read, so I kept going. I tell my friends now, at least give it until page 75, because that's when I noticed the change. That's when Changeling suddenly went from bad to very good, and it kept me turning the page until the very end. I've read plenty of modern urban fantasies, but Delia Sherman puts an interesting spin on a New York full of fairies, monsters, and gods. The beginning barely hooked me, yet I was sad for it to end!

I wasn't impressed. I didn't get very far before I just stopped reading and took it back to the library.

This sounded like my jam, but I didn't much care for it. Neef was neither interesting or likable and the conception of New York between and the fairy world wasn't really interesting or special either.

Fun young adult fantasy which avoids many fantasy cliches.

Wildly imaginative and entertaining. I loved this book. It is even better if you have some knowledge of NYC geography and/or culture. A great introduction to folklore characters from around the world, complete with a list of them with country of origin and description at the end of the book.

It took me a bit to get into this book, I suspect there were several in-jokes about New York City that went over my head, and I never did understand why the Folk want mortal changelings in the first place. Neef, the narrator, is all right, but I decided my favorite character was Changeling, a distinctly different character than I often find in fantasy novels. And overall, it's a nice, quick read and an entertaining, modern spin on fairy tales.

Super cute book. Extremely predictable, but then it's pre-teen level reading, so that's to be expected. Still, I enjoyed it. (I originally rated it at a 3, but revised it with the target audience in mind. As a preteen/early teen level book, I'd give it a 4.)

This one is extremely fun and clever, creating an urban fantasy NYC with a plucky heroine. There is a strange tension between the perceived dangerousness of the faerie world and the safety of the story. I never felt like Neef was really in danger. It's also got an odd take on Asperger syndrome and a few nods to other children's books.

I didn't love the voice in the beginning, but as the plot moved forward into the museum and then the quest, I got into it. Funny and fun. In between YA and middle grade.
