One of my first horror novels! I found the themes of cultural identity to be the absolute highlights of the book. The horror was a bit gory at times. Also a bit confusing with the second person POV switches.

This book was a trip! I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it. Very unique prose that took me a hot minute to get into, but once I did I very much enjoyed reading it.

This book is dubbed as horror, but I think it’s more of a paranormal thriller. Maybe that’s what horror really is? I don’t know, whatever, it was exciting!

We follow 4 best buddies in this book. It has a good feel. Almost like a good Stephen King novel, except Steven King typically does a better job of characterizing characters. If I could have grown more attached to these characters this book would be a new favorite. But I just couldn’t get to invested in these guys. But back to the prose. Even though I wish we got to know the guys more how this was written I feel like we do get to see inside their heads individually. In a way I haven’t been able to get inside heads in a book before. It’s written in a way you process thoughts. Not always super coherent, but you talking to yourself you know exactly what you mean. It’s extremely effective in some instances.

I think I’ll definitely be picking up another book by this author. I wanna see what else he’s got up his sleeve! If you like thrillers mixed with some weird elk crap then you should give this book a whirl.

Great horror novel! I have been looking for books that features Native American characters. There were so many great moments of anxiety on my part that would not allow me to put it down. However, there are some really dry parts in the story that almost made me give up. Those slow parts are the reasons why I gave this 4 stars.

I gave it a three because the first half didn’t do it for me, but the second half is a five star story. The second half and ending were fantastic!

This own voices book is creepy. And I mean that in the best way possible, because I love a good creepy story. It is the story of 4 Native American men who kill a herd of elk after season and it comes back to haunt them years later as an entity seeks revenge.

This book is violent with graphic violence against animals and people, so even if you enjoy creepy stories that part should be known. It is one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read and I really enjoyed reading the cultural references about the Blackfeet Nation.

This book was crazy weird. I didn't enjoy this book much because it was overly descriptive. Not in a bad way, was definitely meant to pull the reader in. The topics it was overly descriptive on though were killing and cleaning an elk carcass and basketball mainly, neither of which interest me.

Comparing the modern day way of life to the more traditional style of Native Americans was interesting, but there wasn't really enough of it to get a good insight. It mostly just repeats the stereotypes of things like "all Indians are drunks." Some characters were better, but some played right into it, although I suppose that can be said for real life people as well.

This book got super dark in the second half and was a lot more in the horror category.
