I love the way the story was broken up into the separate parts and the found family aspect of it towards the end.

Loved the women-focused storyline about a piece of history that seems quiet. The story felt a bit slow at times, but overall it was wonderful.

In the early nineteenth century England is using their Van Dieman's Land penal colony as a place to ship off convicts from London. Even if those convicts' only real errors is naively falling for someone above their station, and getting pregnant! This is how Evangeline finds herself aboard the Medea on the way to a new life. On board she meets Hazel, a young girl who got caught stealing a silver spoon. As they befriend each other and plan for their new lives, trouble continues to find them. Awaiting the Madea in Van Dieman's Land is a colony that has pushed out the natives. Or, in the case of Mathinna, abducted them from their village as an experiment to see if they can be "civilized". When their lives collide each character has to do what they can to survive and thrive.
This story will draw you in. The descriptions will make you feel like you are in prisoned with the characters under horrific circumstances, and striving to work and redefine themselves in their new environment! This is a story of friendship, strong women, identity, and breaking the norm.
My book club really enjoyed this one. We had a lot of good discussions and most everyone gave it high stars!
I would definitely recommend it!

I truly liked this story, but felt like the story about the Aboriginal girl was unnecessary. I found out that the author decided to include it when she started researching for the story, so maybe that’s why it felt half-done.

I was recommended this book  by the owner of  a small book shop in New Hampshire that I found while on vacation. This was the first historical fiction book I had read, and with this book, I fell in love with the genre! I normally read at a slower pace than others but I could not put this book down! I always recommend it to others now.
