"I figure the end of the world just ripped off humanity's mask, and now the true face of mankind is out there grinning like a mad skull in the moonlight."
Coburn has woken up from a five year slumber to find himself in a zombie apocalypse. He is a vampire. He's hungry, nocturnal, and pissed off. He needs blood, but theirs won't do. He must find human survivors and protect his food supply.
I forgot how much I love Wendig's writing. I was immediately sucked in from the very first chapter. I felt like I couldn't turn the pages quick enough as I found myself fully invested in how one vampire was going to survive in a world of zombies. This book was bloody, action-packed, crude, and hilarious.
Coburn was an asshole you either come to love or hate. I, for one, loved him. He had a vulgar personality and every word out of his mouth was an insult or sarcastic remark (it me 💁🏾♀️). His character developed so well as he met a group of humans who were wary of traveling with him, but struck a deal - they would supply him with blood as long as he protected them along their journey. The way he acted like a dick to them, but deep down, started caring for them was endearing.
This isn't your typical vampire story, but I recommend this book to everyone who would love an action-packed apocalyptic vampire vs. zombies story full of crude humour.

I actually really enjoyed this book! It finally answers the question of what would happen to a vampire in the zombie apocalypse. I loved the character of Coburn, idk he's just funny, he's not really what you could call a good person, but his arc is really interesting and overall just a good character. If you love vampires like I do, I think you'd enjoy his story.
There are some bits that are disturbing and pretty unhinged but I think that's to be expected with horror. There is some not great language used, although since the main character is not meant to be 100% likeable I think thats to eb expected too. Overall I am really glad I read it and honestly wish there was a sequel.

Not for me, personally. May be for someone else but it wasn’t personally for me.

I loved this book. Gritty, zombie apocalypse versus vampire story that's a page turner. This needs to be a movie....wait no because they would just screw it up. Well worth the read!!!

Started out great, but drifted into "just good". The cannibalism didn't make a lot of sense given that there were other food sources and the clown cult seemed goofy too. So did the Sons of Man come to that.

T. Ryder Smith does a good job of narrating and makes audio a fun and entertaining listen. Vampire & zombie combo works well and the 'over the top' action/vampire resurrections with humorous details as Creampuff the dog makes this an overall fast paced great listen.

I liked the writing, but the author seemed to not know where the story was going and what characters were in it.
