the premise was perfectly tailored to my interests and the execution was almost there, at times i was just very aware that the author was making things happen rather than them always being a natural occurrence and also i felt like there should’ve been more dealing with the fallout of certain things, but overall amazing read and fascinating twists and turns

I loved this book a lot more than I thought I would, to be perfectly honest. I was charmed and impressed with The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet but I had no idea it’s place in the Mitchell-verse and how crucial it was to loving some of the best and weirdest parts (in my opinion) of this novel.

unfortunately, for me, this did not at all land. it pains me to say so! really, it does, as I love more Mitchell than not. I found the main four to be pretty cookie-cutter and the cameos tiresome. maybe you'll like this more than me if you self-identify as a "music person"? sorry to be a grouch!

Absolutely loved the story, absolutely hated the narration. I'm going to have to read this again very soon on Kindle, maybe even *gasp* paper, so I can dogear and make margin notes. In fact, it's probably time to get paper versions of all of David Mitchell's novels so I can make a ton of notes and study how they all fit together because DANG.
