The Spy Who Raised Me by Ted Anderson

If you thought your parents were weird, wait until you read this!

The Spy Who Raised Me is Ted Anderson’s most recent work. Known for the My Little Pony series, this comic is a sharp contrast to a fun rainbow-filled world. Due for publication in April 2021, Gianna Meola brings the story to life with red-themed illustrations.

It’s a short story about secrets, lies, and spies. Although a quick and easy read, it can be boring and unrealistic in more than one place.

As someone who grew up thinking being a spy would be really cool, I was very excited to read this. It follows J.B. who lived a very ordinary life but one day found out that she had the skills of a spy and that her mother was hiding a very big secret from her. The storyline was interesting, unlike anything I've read before.

It was fast-paced, though a little confusing at times, but also action-packed. As I kept reading, I became more disturbed by the many lies that J.B. grew up with, especially with how manipulative her mother was. The main character, being a somewhat 'programmed' child, had certain controls that could be voiced activated, such as "Halt and Obey". As if that wasn't messed up enough, there's a [slight spoiler] few frames in the book where it's being repeated over and over again [end spoiler]. I can't help but to wonder if this storyline had a deeper meaning behind it. However, other reviews explains it to be child abuse.

I didn't enjoy the art style. It just wasn't my thing. However, I can appreciate the monochromatic colours since that isn't easy at all to do. It also wasn't particularly memorable. While reading it, I took a break for a few weeks only to feel very confused as I couldn't remember what J.B. looked like. Now, as I am writing the review a week after finishing the book, I still can't remember most details of the book.

I still have many questions after finishing the book. Some are unanswered, some are just events in the book that I am very confused by. There were definitely many points from other review that made me realise there were a few plot holes which I didn't notice at all. Though I didn't change my ratings because of that, it's still an important point to note.

This book left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, it was interesting and different, not memorable for the most part but there were parts that left me with negative feelings and only those are the ones that are ingrained in my memory.

The faces weren't emoting, like at all. I had no idea what the characters were feeling. And also everything was info dumped immediately in the first few pages.

This was definitely a fun and action-packed story with a great main character.
the plot twists were good and the story was enjoyable and I ended up reading it in one sitting. but the art, on the other hand, was terrible and so was the color palette, it just was a deal-breaker for me, and its what made me rate this 3 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Lerner Publishing Group for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review!

Story felt rushed. It needed more time for mother/daughter conflict to resolve. Daughter would have had more trauma from the abuse she suffered. Also I didn't find the art very appealing.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All of the opinions are my own and this did not affect my review in any way.

Ever since I was little, I have been obsessed with spies. I find them intriguing and exciting and to be honest if I had the opportunity I would, without thinking, totally be a spy. So when I found out this graphic novel I knew I had to read it. Unfortunately, this book was not what I was excepting.

In The Spy Who Raised Me we follow J.B who has a set of abilities that she has no recollection about, until one day she finds out she is a spy working for a covert agency.

I was so underwhelmed with this graphic novel, I had big expectations and to be honest I did not like it at all. The plot is very fast paced so it was hard to keep track of what was happening. The characters are not developed at all, and most of them are very unlikeable.

The story line was incoherent, the characters were flat and overall the art style wasn’t impressive.

Overall I am sad to admit that I did not enjoy reading this graphic novel, it was very underwhelming and I was expecting so much more. I am not sure who this novel was meant for but sadly I do not recommend it.

Thanks so much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me read and review this book.
