A teacher is arrested for the rape and murder of a child. We’re given pages of incontrovertible evidence that the police have the right man, but on the basis of one ambiguous sentence we know straight away that he’s innocent. Clever idea, and well executed for the most part. There’s a slight problem with the end when King just doesn’t know when to shut up. He seems to get a bit emotional about the characters. Other than that, all good. There are themes of courage and cowardice but they’re not really developed or explored and it’s all fast paced and story story story.

Equal parts unsettling and heartwarming, a perfect mix of King’s classic paranormal and hard case crime stories. The Outsider is a great first introduction to the darkness in the Stephen King universe without being too unsettled or bored to continue.

For me, Ralph Anderson was an incredibly human character. Seems like a stupid comment, but his mistakes followed him and truly affected him as they would with any one of us. His relationship with detective Holly Gibney is one of the sweetest platonic relationships I’ve ever seen, built solely on admiration, compassion, and a shared trauma they’re helping each other through.

4/5, because I definitely prefer a more intense paranormal plot. But still super good!!
