This is my second time reading “The Wicked King,” but my first time listening to it on audiobook.

The second book in Holly Black’s “Folk of the Air” series is a rich fantasy story that balances the wonder of fairyland with its dark mythology.

The first book in the series, “The Cruel Prince,” took its time to establish the world and let the readers get to know the characters. While the build up was slower than some might expect, it offered more solid ground for Black to be able to further the trilogy’s plot in “The Wicked King.”

It’s so easy to fall into this world, these characters, and this story. Even when it feels like not much is happening, the story chugs along. Everything is for a purpose.

In the second book, you can truly feel Jude’s exhaustion and desire for power — a common theme threaded throughout.

This sequel read much like a TV show and ended with the perfect “season finale.”
SpoilerI can’t believe I was tricked into believing Cardan wasn’t the cruel prince he had been. Like Jude, I couldn’t see his scheme, I couldn’t see the harm in freeing him. He seemed so genuine and now here we are. Queen of Nothing, indeed.

0 spice, a little romance.

I loved the romance between Cardan and Jude, but i’m so sad about the ending. But i can imagine how it will set up the next book.
Spoiler Everything  was so cute and I was so happy when they got married and then it just all went to shit
. Also I hate locke.

I'm so glad I decided to stick with the series, this book was totally worth it! The 'enemies to lovers' trope is done well for once, because can you call someone your enemy without them having tried to kill you? The plot twists, the betrayals!! *chef's kiss*

Overall I enjoyed the book,
The plot carried well from the first and I intent to read the final book of the series.
However, I felt there was much to be desired in explaining character motives (hopefully this will all come to light in the final book). I hope to be able to empathise with the characters and feel that the relationships they are building are justifiable.
