I loved the art in this book. It makes me look at art differently and i think it has good explanations on how art works.

Blue Period is for the wanderers... those of us who are unsure about our path forward, longing for a reason for the next part of our life, waiting for that one thing to catch our eye and be the thing that drives us forward for the future. In Blue Period Vol. 1, all it takes is a painting to take our smart but aimless MC from wandering and stumbling through life to having a purpose and drive for the future. Suddenly, he goes from uncertainty and recklessness to a driven focus, and that focus is art school. With stunning art compiled from multiple artists, Blue Period is a story of longing, decision-making, and a focus on what comes next, even if it feels impossible.

Picked this up because volume 1 was available in the library and surprised how good it was. It's about a young man in Tokyo who tries to follow his interest in visual art, and you get to learn a few things as well about drawing techniques. Quite a few memorably quirky characters as well.

This was cute but nothing groundbreaking. The most enjoyable part was definitely the undertone of following your dreams, even if they are difficult or unpopular among your loved ones. Given that the main character was stereotyped as an unlikely artist only furthered that message, which I thought was a cool choice. Interjecting quick tips about art theory and techniques was fun, too, as it felt useful in the story and added a unique storytelling element. Unfortunately, the structure of the book never grabbed me. The pace stays very quick but sacrifices the exposition and scene transitions, making it hard to follow anyone besides Yatora (since nearly everyone else is mentioned only in passing or without introduction before they become significant). Even the protagonist suffered from minimal exposition, though - I never understood what made him quite so subversive to his classmates and missed completely that he had ear piercings. Did nobody know that he was smart? I guess not.

If the story wanted to primarily address the choice to pursue art against the odds and/or show a unique coming-of-age perspective, I think a greater focus on character development and fewer people would have been ideal. Instead, it tries to do plot and character in equal amounts, and it feels jumbled as a whole. My rating is definitely dependent on how quick this was to read (only a few hours); I would have been frustrated if it were longer.

I love this manga. It makes me want to focus on my own art so much more. I love all the characters and how they all care for each other in a short amount of time.
