The flaws of Holmes' first mystery are pretty well-known, and it's certainly not a strong example of the genre. As an introduction to the deathless character of Holmes, however, it's riveting.

I really liked this book. I found the story interesting and the writing was very readable (I wasn't sure what to expect on that front.) I had a moment of confusion in the middle of the book but pretty quickly realized where the author had gone. I enjoyed the detour. It was enlightening to read about the meeting of Holmes and Watson. It definitely gave me an original view of how the pair interacted and the enjoyable oddities of Holmes and his methods.

2022 PopSugar Reading Challenge #34: A book set in Victorian times

Terrific. Introduced to Sherlock Holmes, really, through the BBC series. After reading Doyle's work, I look forward to reading many more! Great book.

I recently remembered my copy of the complete Sherlock Holmes canon as read by Stephen Fry and I decided to slowly make my way through each of the books. This was how it all started, and while I remembered the first half, I didn't remember much about the part that took place in Utah with the Mormons. While this is not my favorite of the Sherlock Holmes tales, it is how it all begins, and for that reason alone, this tale is worthy of being read. That said, listening to Stephen Fry was a total treat and I look forward to listening to each one in the coming days. I'm finding it the perfect bedtime listening! That man could read a shopping list and make it sound interesting, lol!

I always meant to read the Sherlock Holmes stories but only just got around to it--thanks to Stephen Fry. I recently read his autobiography and started watching QI and he mentions them frequently and reveals that he's a member of a Sherlock Holmes society. So since I'm obsessed with Stephen Fry, I'm trying on his obsession.
I can't shake the idea of being a grade school kid reading detective stories under a blanket after lights out and in a tree with my legs dangling. These characters and stories are an institution and I clearly have an idealized Image of them in my mind.
The first story doesn't disappoint even if the Big Love stuff is a bit long and distracting. I'm trying to read them in the proper order and woo I get to read Sign of Four next. I can also recommend the librivox podcast. Not the best reader in the world of course but definitely pleasant to listen to.

Good old Sherlock Holmes. Cocaine and opium addicted crime-solving sloppy-ass violin player. What the hell is not to like?

I am rereading the original ACD canon, purchased for $2 on Kindle. This one is just as enjoyable as when I first read it as a teenager.
