This was far less traumatising than my memory of the film was expecting it to be, which is good! I listened to the audiobook, so I struggled a little bit with the lapine words sometimes, but other than that this was a great book.

It was also interesting hearing the introduction by Richard Adams where he explained that this was just a story he made up to tell his kids and they convinced him to turn it into a book. And he then struggled to get it published, but that it was surprisingly popular which he never expected. I think all of that comes across in the book, it's a story he wrote for himself and his kids and he refused to make any changes to make it more marketable - that authenticity of his writing and connection to the story shines through.

I found this really hard to put down once I got into it.  I see why it has "classic" status. It walks an impressive line with characters that are neither completely anthropomorphized, nor so animalistic as to be hard to relate to. They are more human than any real rabbit would be, but with just enough alien details to remind us that they aren't humans. I particularly like the touch that rabbits can't count past four.  One, two, three, four, "thousand" (many). Wonderful little bit of world building.

Absolutely masterful start to finish. The rabbit-lore of El-Ahrairah and his many adventures was so wonderfully atmospheric, combined with the thought and care that went into the language and inferiority of the rabbits — to say nothing of the plot itself. An absolute classic that I can’t believe I never read before now.

This is a classic for a reason. It’s a story of friendship, courage and survival, with lovely descriptions of the English countryside and a very believable cast of characters who are almost all animals.
A fantastic performance by Peter Capaldi made this 17.5 hour audiobook a real pleasure to listen to.
As a person who tends to be very sensitive to (and easily put off by) the lack of female characters in a book, I did find it extremely funny when the rabbits, having found a new home, turned around and were all... "Hey guys? Umm... we have no women, and that's kind of a problem." Well, I could have told them that from page 1, if only they'd asked me!

Just a perfectly sweet story. Makes you feel like a kid being told a bedtime story by a grandparent.

I listened to Peter Capaldi narate it, he was fantastic.
