3.0

Like all the books in this series, the bright cartoon-ish illustrations draw kids in while accurately communicating some difficult concepts, appropriate to the target age. Touches on the history of medicine, nursing, the Civil War, the American Red Cross, and how women contributed to the war effort on both sides. One topic I haven't seen covered elsewhere is "Nursing on Ships" which discusses the Red Rover hospital ship and Mother Angela Gillespie. Some other women are profiled including Dorothea Dix, Mary Ann Bickerdyke, and Clara Barton.

There is one fairly gruesome page, even for a cartoon. It covers surgery in the field, specifically amputations.

I love this series of books. Kids love them, and I learned a few things myself. I didn't know that "Red Rover" was a boat, not just a children's game where you try to break each other's arms.
