What It’s About: This is part of a series by Amazon where popular thriller authors write stories with a common theme of deception. This entry is about a woman who has discovered that her husband is cheating on her after she thought they had resolved his previous infidelity some time ago.
Plot: This one kept me guessing until the end. I thought the twist was clever, and I very much liked the brief moral dilemma about the ethical nature of spying.
Style: It’s hard to produce suspense in such a short form, and I thought Lippman did it well. It was easy to follow and to the point, but still mysterious and interesting. I liked how the text conversations were formatted as well. There was a lot of subtext there that was eventually added to with the main character’s thoughts.
Trigger Warnings: Infidelity and death.
Final Thoughts: Some of these shorter reads don’t come off so well, especially when you’re dealing with a theme that often supports much longer novels, but I enjoyed this one. I’ll have to look up some of Laura Lippman’s other books.
Graphic: Infidelity
Minor: Death and Murder
