Ok so this book was recommended to me in the 12 recs from 12 people /book friend challenges. It’s not part of my comfort zone at all (the sci fi domination) but I am always looking to branch out from what I’m used to. This starts off slow and a little confusing / head spinning. I had to re-read / read slowly to understand the world building & the breakneck twists & turns. This is only one POV (Cara’s) & I feel like if we got Dell’s or maybe even some other Wiley City important personnel , I wouldn’t have felt as overwhelmed. Once you get to the halfway mark, it starts to come together and make more sense. I do wish Dell had been a stronger presence in the story & even a stronger figure in the implied romance between Dell & Cara.

Trigger warnings can be found here

The Space Between Worlds is one of those books that I instantly fell in love with and adored all the way through, yet wouldn't automatically recommend to other people. I feel you need to enjoy a certain type of story to enjoy this book, and that's because it has a gritty flavor to it that, paired with a certain aloofness, won't work for everyone.

But boy, did it work for me.

For me, this world has the same feel as movies like Book of Eli and Mad Max - the kind of dusty, post-apocalyptic scene where only the sturdy or incredibly rich survive. There's a meanness to this book that will either work for you or won't, and it's the setting paired with the human products of its environment that made me truly love this.

I found Cara a fantastic character to read from, because a lot of her character work is done between the lines and she's not always easy to follow or understand. Her motivations don't jump out at you - you have to dig for it by weighing interactions and stacking her experiences up in your head as you move through parallel Earths with her. You have to walk with her for a good distance before she starts making sense, and for me that meant she never got boring.

I also got a good kick out of the romance aspects to be found in here, even though from a distance it all looks uncomfortable, cold and mean. You really have to look over the characters' shoulders to understand the what and how of it all, and again that's something I love but might not work for others.

A new favorite, for sure, and an author I'll be following very closely in the years to come!

4.5 stars. Enjoyed this a ton. I didn't know much about the premise going in, but it sucked me in instantly, and in general it was just incredibly well-written. Reading this was a pleasure. I found the main character very interesting and sympathetic, there were a lot of very well-developed and fascinating secondary characters, and the plot went in a number of directions I wasn't expecting. The fact that this was a debut novel makes it all the more impressive. I'm definitely interested in reading more of this author's work in the future.

I really enjoyed this book. The Space Between Worlds is a sci-fi novel about a woman named Cara who’s able to travel to multiple universes. The book had interesting discussions about identity and privilege. I think this is a great book for people looking to explore the sci-fi genre 🤗
