Not the best book in the series in my opinion. Too much focus on irritable characters just introduced instead of balance with the characters we know and love. That being said, wonderful character development and plot twist.

I really liked this book, I read it in two days. It would have been a 5 star but the climax was a little bit underwhelming. I understand that it is a set up book because it’s the 3rd book in the series but I still feel like more could have happened because I swear the fight was one chapter.

The first half felt off, kind of boring and awkward, like 3 stars, but the second half and the climax was super good and bumped the score back up to 4 stars! The writing in the climax was descriptive and compelling.
Was almost a bleh book but Riordan was able to save it :)

This one might be the best so far. I had forgotten so many plot points, it was a joy to be sucked into this world again. I love Riordan's interpretation of the gods' personalities, and the way they interact with the half bloods. I may be biased, but Hermes specifically is wonderful in this series.
I have a love hate relationship with Thalia, I dislike her as a person most of the time since she reminds me of the people who doubt me and try to stop me from making my own plans, not because I'm unable to do so successfully, but because they feel the need to control everything. The way she undermined Percy, humiliated him in front of everyone and later blamed him for Annabeth's "death" made my blood boil. Every time she did so I felt personally attacked, and I think that's partly due to me seeing myself in Percy but also to how incredibly well written these books are. I understand that she's just a mentally ill child (not an insult, just a fact. Years of parental neglect, having to survive homelessness and violence with only two other kids by her side and to top it all off being murdered and resurrected all before the age of 16 does that to a person) and I think she deserves all the care and patience in the world but I wouldn't enter a room with her in it if I could help it. However I do really appreciate her character, how complex and morally grey she is. This is just as much her story as it is Percy's, and I think that's really cool. I love that at the end she took her destiny into her own hands and joined the hunters to avoid being manipulated again. I can't wait to see her shine more in the next one.
I also enjoyed the subversion of the damsel in distress trope with Annabeth and later with Artemis, how they were captured, yes, but still showed how strong willed and powerful they are by being able to hold up the literal sky. Also, I can't describe how much my body hurt after reading the description of how it feels to hold up the sky. Absolutely terrifying and painful just to imagine. Amazing.
The last thing, I grew to adore Zoe. I was so invested by the end that it felt like a punch to the gut once the prophecy came to be. Incredible character.

“‘Your fatal flaw is personal loyalty, Percy. You do not know when it is time to cut your losses. To save a friend, you would sacrifice the world.’”

I’m not sure if I have much to say about this book. I loved it of course, just as much as the first time I read it. Out of the three I’ve read so far it’s probably my least favorite though mostly because Annabeth is barely in it and I’m dying for some Percabeth content. That being said, I loved all the new characters. I especially loved Nico of course. I loved him when I first read this series and I love him even more now. It makes me so sad that I have to read about him losing his happiness in real time. I hate that he doesn’t have Bianca anymore and I hate that he doesn’t trust Percy. He’s gonna be so sad in the next book, but being a son of Hades is pretty freaking cool in my opinion. I liked getting to know Thalia more and getting to see how she compares to Percy. I also really liked Zoë by the end of the book. She was a little annoying at first, but I’m a sucker for characters being turned into constellations when they die (very specific I know). I also love how Percy continues to surprise me. He’s so brave and just really freaking awesome. He held up the sky?! Because he wanted to! I loved the comparisons to Hercules and how Percy kind of denounced being that type of hero. Overall, I loved it. So much more character growth and plot complexities. I don’t want this reread to end!

Favorite Quotes:
“It was bad enough I had to depend on my mom to drive me to my battles.”

“Annabeth had grown taller than me since last summer, which I found disturbing.”

“I thought about how we’d danced together for half a song, and my heart felt even heavier.”

“‘And I know you’ll do what’s best for Annabeth.’
‘How can you be sure?’
‘Because she’d do the same for you.’”

“‘I could use some dam french fries.’”

“‘There is always a way out for those clever enough to find it.’”

“A voice inside me was screaming Ask about Annabeth! That’s what I cared most about.”

“I looked at Thalia and Zoë, and I decided it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to die fighting with friends like this.”

“‘You spoke the truth, Percy Jackson. You are nothing like… like Hercules. I am honored that you carry this sword.’”

“She touched the new streak of gray in my hair that matched hers exactly—our painful souvenir from holding Atlas’s burden.”

“So I took her hand, and I don’t know what everybody else heard, but to me it sounded like a slow dance: a little sad, but maybe a little hopeful too.”
