Wow what a great start to the trilogy! I’ve heard a lot of hype about this book, so I was hesitant, but it’s one of the best YA books I’ve read in a long time.

The plot kept me curious as we got deeper and deeper into the story, hitting me with several twists (only 1-2 of which were suspected).
I’m really excited to see where this goes, how Bree and Sel continue to get on (I hope she chooses him!!), and if they rescue Nick.

I will absolutely be continuing the series, and looking for more work by Tracy Deonn in the future.

Good:

Learning about Patricia’s and Bree’s history and how their family tree was root workers was beyond interesting. Especially in its connection to grief and the way that death really teaches and takes away lot from people. And the getting an understanding of the root work and blood-crafting and how it impacts the Legendborn world was such an interesting part of the book.

I desperately need to know what happened with that baby and or father of that shadowborn child though.

Bree: She was a good introductory starter mc. Especially for young black girls living in the south surrounded by white people constantly. But…

Bad:

Bree: A lot of instances I think Bree needed to connect with other people outside of the Legendborn community. Connect with other people that were black or POC. But she never really did. Not even really hanging out with Alice as much before or after joining the Legendborn and having attitude that constantly gives bad friend.
She also allowed a lot of things to slide. Especially with Tor and Vaughn.

Plot: Learning so much about the Legendborn, the order, the table and the shadowborn felt so info-dumpy that without combing this with the audiobook I wouldn’t have been able to finish this.

Selwyn: his behavior in the beginning was so annoying like I understood but it was getting a bit much especially when it felt like no investigation was truly happening just being aggressive for no reason. Then to find out
he was in love with nick as a child and then was just jealous that nick basically chosen Bree when he was in nick life and was abandoned😭
. I wanted to feel bad for him especially with the levels of indoctrination with being embedded into the Merlin’s, the forced removal from his mother and then to be bounded to nick in such a way is so horrible and horrifying.

But…most of his actions was just giving loser vibes to me that it made it hade for me to feel anything for him except toward the end section.

Alice: was barely in the book to really convey she was Bree’s best friend. How it was written was showing more college friend not childhood to me but as Bree was grieving and was refusing to grieve properly I let it slide how she was treated. But when she came in toward the end section I was a big fan of Alice. #FuckTor

I will admit that I struggled a bit getting into this book, because there was a lot of information and fantasy terms introduced and it was difficult to keep track of everything at first. The beginning ten percent also felt slower than the rest of the pacing. But despite that, I knew I wanted to persevere and it hooked me by the time I was halfway through. Deonn managed to weave such a complicated and nuanced story about power, grief, and love. I'm truly astounded and need to get my hands on the next book asap!

I absolutely loved this, I found it gripping from very near the beginning. The only reason it's not 5* for me is I found the world building a little lacking and therefore making the backgroun a bit confusing. Overall it was an excellent read, I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

This was a breathtaking story with heartbreaking emotional depth and delves into grief so beautifully. I wish I could mesmer myself just so I could read it again for the first time.
