I really enjoyed this book, it was a lot of fun and I was honestly excited to get through this story to find out what happened in the end. I loved all the characters other than Muzi's friend, Mr. Tau, and Sydney. I really love how chaotic the story was but it was perfect because it still made sense and what was happening was very clear. The blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and mythology was just a breath of fresh air, honestly.

I will be taking a star off because a character repeatedly misgendered a trans woman at the end of the story and because
SpoilerMr. Tau is a child rapist and had the nerve to cry about feeling "guilty". Bro, end yourself, no one cares about your tears. I also hated that Numvula's mother slut shammed/victim shammed and humiliated her in front of the damned town. The mother paid for it promptly afterwards and so did 2,600 people, if I read correctly.
One last issue I had with the story is that the ending felt really rushed, I would have liked a bit more of the story towards the end.

All in all I really enjoyed this story, it was so fun and exciting to read.

I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars!

this is definitely different from anything i have read before and if not for the book club i would have never thought about it.

firstly, seeing and hearing about people with my skin color in a fantasy world is somewhat hard to come by. this was a little hard to get into but once you're in, you're in.

i found the story slow at times and i can't say that i was in love with the ending but overall this was a pretty good story and I'm glad i was able to read it.

Marvelous. Characters, plot, imagining, how it all comes together. There is a playfulness & lyricism to the writing too that makes it an extra pleasure to read.

3-1/2 stars rounded up. This had more gory violence than I am comfortable reading, but it was an engaging story that I had to finish anyway. Very imaginative and original.

A fun ride! Multiple POV doesn't always mesh with me so it's a solid 3.5.

Good worldbuilding but so-so execution in showing its depth. I liked the idea of demigods and how their powers were described. The multiple & short POVs gave variable depth to the characters. Some were more fleshed out than others. The villain was too cartoonish & the ending was a little too neat, and wrapped up with a wink and a nudge for a sequel...

This book isn't perfect. There are pacing issues. Too many narratives fighting for space. Too many plot points fighting for my emotions, not letting me really feel the impact. There were also some problematic aspects, with victim blaming and creepy behavior and erotic notes that often came off as unnecessary.

That said, it was an enjoyable read. It was refreshing and new and sentimental in a weepy sort of way. I do intend to keep an eye out for more books by Drayden, because they are certain to get only better as she hones her craft.
