Walt is a beautiful writer but I just don’t think he’s my cup of tea. Oh well!

i never opened a book and immediately saw echoes of my deepest beliefs in its writing. there were times, of course, where i felt disconnected (especially in the clear love whitman has for his country), but those moments never took away from the others. i was completely enamored by his language and his imagery, and i found small bits and pieces here and there that contained multitudes that i want to put under a microscope and pick at until nothing's left. i understand why whitman is so revered, and i'm glad i just so happened to pick up this book on the offhand chance i, a nature lover, would like something called "leaves of grass" by a famously well-known poet. of course i did. it was ridiculous to think i wouldn't. it's not perfect, but who am i to say what is perfect? whitman clearly saw the world through a lens many people completely disregard. i love that lens, i love the complete acceptance he has for every aspect of life and death, and i hope to channel his beliefs for years to come.

I can appreciate Whitman's prose and the genius of his poetry, how he revolutionized the standard of his craft. However, I love poetry for it's ability to speak to me as no other writing can, and Leaves of Grass just didn't cut to my soul. This felt like a love letter to America, which is not my cup of tea. I was also waiting for more analysis on nature, and never got what I was looking for. I'm glad to have read this, but not for me.
