I'll state straight away, my bad for not checking content warnings.

This book is deeply painful and unflinchingly honest about very difficult things, and I was not the target audience for this story. Having said that, I appreciate and applaud the courage and skill of this memoir. It's a beautifully written and powerfully moving story that I believe needed to be told. I know there are many who will benefit from reading this and feel seen, connected to, and unalone in these pages.

For my part, I found the nonlinear storytelling to be confusing and quite hard to keep straight in my mind as far as who was alive, when events happened relative to one another, and the relative age of anyone at any given moment. I was deeply disturbed by the graphic depictions of her sexual assault, but feel uncomfortable truly criticizing it as I know feeling disturbed is a part of what is meant to be evoked, and any victim should be permitted to claim their story and find strength in it however they can.

All else that might have made me squirm, I have no true qualms as far as the memoir goes, as a critique of non fiction, by its very nature, can't be about story content. It's about a life, and no outside observer/reader can truly say what deserves to be included in that realm.

I'll be honest that I read this book because it is a peek into the life of a family I already know quite well. That said, it still ended up being pretty jawdroppingly shocking. I know it's autobiographical but it just felt like an onslaught of tragedy. Too much bad stuff happened and it didn't feel like much of anyone was redeemed. It's real life, I know, but quite a bummer to read. Not sure what I am supposed to take away from people being so tremendously horrible to each other and themselves. Heart break. I guess the win is T Kira grew up and got a book deal...

This is very much a "all the trigger warnings" very seriously kind of book but it's a really good read nonetheless

The last chapter of the book was honestly my favorite part especially with it going back and forth between her and her mom's timeline

I don't have much to say besides READ. THIS. BOOK. Anyone wants a suggestion for a good memoir to read this is it

This was a tough book to read. The sexual abuse, the way the author’s parents made choices that had horrible impacts on their family, and the overarching ache of loss … yeah, this was really tough to read.

However, I did like the stylistic choices of how the story was told. Each chapter/section felt like a mini-essay; the book as a whole was a collection of memories, told much in the way I remember things from my own life, as their own beats that don’t need to be connected to the memories around them to make one cohesive story.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy this book - it was too painful for that. But I connected with the author and her story in a real way, and all I want is to give her a big hug and hope she feels included and loved exactly where she is now.

 - Am I the last queer person on earth to read LONG LIVE THE TRIBE OF FATHERLESS GIRLS? Maybe. Am I glad I finally did it? My goodness, yes.
- This book is incredible. Madden is detailing some horrific events, and yet this book is so tender, both toward her younger self and her family.
- At first I wasn't sure about the vignette style of storytelling, with all the jumping around in time. I'm glad I stuck with it, though, because the way Madden's story unwinds at the end of the book is spectacular.
