4.25 ⭐️ This was haunting and brilliant. Gave me the chills. Such a fan of Madeline Miller’s writing and her retellings. Better than a 4 star read but as it is a short story, I couldn’t quite give it 5 stars.

I loved Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and after so many recommendations, I had to read Galatea and I’m absolutely overjoyed by it! As a short story, it has a natural fast pace but the characters are well defined it becomes easy to empathise with the protagonist (Galatea). I still adore Miller’s writing style, I feel immediately immersed in the time period. My favourite part was the Note from the Author, I found Miller’s insights brief but inspiring and satisfying. It’s wonderful to find a writer so invested in the message and history behind their writing. Examining classics with a modern lens is important, and Madeline Miller does this well. My only complaint is that it’s too short, I know that’s the point of a short story but I’m greedy, I want more. I recommend this to all classicists and those who love to explore social issues.

A very short read but very gripping. I loved how Madeline was able to capture something so cruel yet real in this symbolic re-telling.

I loved this. The audiobook narration by Ruth Wilson was perfect at using timing and adjustments to reflect tension and different characters.

The story is a tender retelling of a misogynistic tale from the Greek myths.

The afterword is excellent and so so important for appreciating this short story.

Although it is brief and slightly one-dimenosional, it is a heartbreaking about narcissistic abuse and a feminist reimagining of the “Pygmalion” myth is always welcomed.

Very interesting short story that is an adaptation of Pygmalion. Quick read. It reminds me of the never ending sacrifices of the women across the ages whose shoulders I stand on today.
