SpoilerThrawn is so cool. Seeing him rise from a purportedly exiled nobody to Grand Admiral was very cool, and it also gives so much depth to the galaxy. Giving us glimpses of what the Unknown Regions and Wild Space have in store, and even hinting that maybe Thrawn isn’t the villain. I think he’s just trying to do all this to try to give aid to his people. I’d like to know more about how they decided to place him on that planet and why.

Depth

This book gave depth to a character that in previous run ins is shown as an evil character with tactical ability but no real personality.

Sure, it's genre fluff... but it's GOOD genre fluff. Reminded me in a lot of ways of RA Salvatore, who also writes genre fluff that I really like. And the concept of "how exactly did they manage to build two Death Stars without anybody knowing" was well worth exploring.

Sherlock Holmes in space

A combination of Sherlock Holmes, House of Cards, and The Art of War, Thrawn is a novel and a character full of mystery. This is less an origin story and more an ascendancy story, with many questions still lingering about who Thrawn really is. This will certainly appeal to those who enjoy naval battles as well as political battles, though they do get somewhat repetitive as Thrawn works his way up the Imperial ladder. However, his philosophy on life and war are worth the read in and of themselves, making for a great expansion to the already rich Star Wars lore
