Maya Angelou is a prophet. She shows us the way to live and be. She is inspiring and beautiful and her words help us to make something more of ourselves. Not all of this book was for me but that doesn’t make it any less perfect. 

N.B. I would highly recommend the audio book with Maya Angelou reading her words unabridged. She imbues so much soul and life into every sentence - it is a joy and privilege to behold.

Maya Angelou is great, but the best thing about this book is that the audiobook is read by her. I love when she's sharing stories that she learned from, and the coffee story and the rug story will definitely stick with me, but her preachy advice (e.g. all the stuff about patriotism) is not my thing and I often disagreed with her. It's a disjointed collection, and in particular her short essay on rape feels like her just taking the opportunity to throw a take out there without having done research or thought it through. Take what resonates and leave the rest!

• I liked some parts. It just didn't lived up to my expectations. I expected something more. There were a few things I didn't agree with or experiences I would've have thought differently. 
• Found some inspiring beautiful quotes though.
• I loved her thoughts on courage as the most important virtue.
• It felt patronizing at times

The objectively false statements about the nature of rape in "violence" angered and upset me so much I had to stop reading. I was expecting a book of wisdom and advice to warm the heart and inspire me to keep going, what I got was judgement and preaching.
