When cow, pig, and chicken go into the doghouse to get their ball back, they don't come out. Then dog tells mouse that he is having duck for dinner. These books are too cute and the author does a great job with these characters. So funny.

The animals lose their ball and it rolls into the Doghouse. Mouse nominates the other animals by describing their strongest characteristics. Cow is big, brave and strong. But she doesn’t come out. When mouse is the last animal outside will he be brave enough to rescue his friends and the ball?

Jan Thomas is my new go-to storytime author. I've been reading this one, along with _Rhyming Dust Bunnies_, for an abbreviated storytime this month and it's been going over big with the preschoolers. For added drama, I'll tell them we're reading a scary book and read the title in a deep, dramatic voice. Every time I read the words "the doghouse" again, I do it in that deep, scary voice. Once I added a "dun dun dun!" afterwards, and the kids picked up on that and started doing it as well. While all of the animals are terrified to enter the dreaded doghouse, it of course turns out not to be at all scary. But the dramatic tension Thomas creates is so effective. Great for building print awareness (certain words, like "the doghouse," are emphasized and easily recognized) and narrative skills (lots of repitition for the kids to repeat). I LOVE this book.

"trick ending, ball goes in dogs doghouse, farm animals, bold illustrations, thick black outlines with solid color"

Return to the world of Mouse, Pig, Cow and Duck with this wacky tale of what happens when their ball rolls into a dog house. Friend, after friend goes into retrieve it, but doesn't come out. While this sounds like a highly inappropriate preschool horror tale, it has a typical Jan Thomas ending and is infused with her trademark humour.

Typical Jan Thomas, this one is hilarious and fun with fabulous illustrations. A great "scary" book for the youngest crowd (especially ones afraid of dogs).

The animal friends lose their ball when it goes into the doghouse but everyone who goes in does not come out again until only Mouse is left. Funny twist at the end and a teaching moment for expressions with multiple meanings --Duck for Dinner.
