Four-and-a-half-stars. I loved this book. I don't read a lot of Gamora/Nebula graphic novels so to actually have a novel about them? I needed it. This is a tie in of MCU and graphic novels. It was interesting to see Lady Death here with Thanos (I've normally only read her with Deadpool.) I would think in the MCU this would take place right before Guardians of the Galaxy one (of course.) Story line wise it was okay, that was the only thing that I didn't enjoy. It could've been really good but there was just something missing. It was just giving us the reason why Nebula hates Gamora and probably the ultimate reason why Gamora leaves Thanos. Beginning of the book dragged so it took a minute to get into but once it got about half way through I never wanted to put it down.

I have a couple of points for this review.

Mackenzi was born to write marvel books. Not only does she do her homework, but she manages to weave in a clever mix of MCU (199999) and Comics (616) to appeal to the wider audience.

We have the Gamora/Nebula dynamic that we know from the movies and also the edge they both have from the comics.

There was a line in Guardians 3 were Nebula says Gamora was always the mean one, and she's right. And she's quite possibly weaker than Nebula because she's highly susceptible to Thanos's gaslighting and manipulation.

You have so many dynamics at play here. You're getting a story with a few twists and just horrible people (characters) and it adds an element to the story that is quite honestly engaging from beginning to end.

This story didn't miss a beat, and the narrator helped it out a lot.

If you love the guardians, I highly recommend this book. It's a quick, fast paced read that had a level of character development and angst that just makes the movies and comics that much better.

Big thanks to Disney publishing and Netgalley for a copy of this book.

A fun book showing more about the relationship and dynamic between Gamora and Nebula before we see them in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. It’s heartbreaking to see how much Thanos really pitted them against each other, and how they really did care for each other in their own way. I love reading these “before” books and hope to see more of them!

Easily the best of the Marvel books I’ve read so far. I feel like it’s hard to get the same characters that we’ve learned to love on the screen—I’m so partial to what I love first, and usually the books just don’t measure up for me. But Mackenzi totally nailed Gamora, Nebula, Thanos, and even the Grandmaster was perfect. The addition of Lady Death was also super interesting. The plot itself wasn’t anything crazy but I feel like it was a cool take on an age-old Marvel set up that made it feel fresh and fun (plus the Hamilton reference ah). And the ending was totally chilling and I squealed like a fangirl. The set up into the movies felt real and fluent and actually a part of it, where I feel like most of these come off feeling like fan fiction. Not that that’s a bad thing in some cases, but for something I love as much as Marvel, it’s so fun to read something that feels legit. Mackenzi nailed it 4.8/5
