The last story was what really solidified how good this collection of short stories is. I never expect Wisconsin to pop up in stories. So when it did, I was surprised. Anything that can mention cheese curds and Spotted Cow makes me smile. However the reveal at the end of the story and the final scenes were really poignant.

I haven't read a lot of short stories and novellas. This was a nice treat. I was always wanting more at the end of each section but still felt like the whole story was told.

just some very good writing - does a lot with a few words and the rythme is perfect

Each vignette was eye-opening, though for the most part I felt the stories were incomplete. Aside from the story the book is named after, the short story format didn't lend enough time for me to relate or engage with each character and their perspectives. I would have preferred either lengthier explanations or less stories for each plot to resonate.

The harsh realities that Evans brings to light are unknown to many in today's American population, but too real for far too many. The mix of people, settings, and feelings that are brought out of the varied stories weave a reality that is often overlooked, but seldom resolved in a respectful and complete fashion. The difference that race adds to society is well discussed by Evans in this short but excellent book.

man I feel bad but this just didn’t really hit for me at this point in time :(

I honestly have already forgotten what the short stories were like, and the title novella was good (lots of Wisconsin references!) but again, it wasn’t super memorable to me. idk, maybe I’m in a bit of a reading slump, or maybe short stories aren’t what I need right now, but I wish I had liked this more than I did :(

Short story books I'll typically rate based off the highest high. The eponymous story, which is the finale, is the best of the bunch in my opinion. The concept of a government agency solely dedicated to fact-checking at a fairly granular level is pretty fascinating. The story gets a bit distracted with love interest drama, but all in all is very solid.

The others are decent, but didn't really grab me.
