The first half you know something creepy is going on but can’t pinpoint what. The second half had lots of twists and turns and many gasps! The drawings throughout definitely add to the creepy nature. I couldn’t put this down and would definitely recommend!!

Thrilling without being maliciously terrifying. I loved the parallels that the pictures created: Anya’s story and also Mallory’s grief. So glad it all gets tied up nicely in the end.

This was a great read. It reminded me of ‘the turn of the key’ by Ruth Ware (which is a good thing). I also really liked the ending, because
it didn’t end with the main character breaking her sobriety.
it is a great story showcasing that even through hard times, you can stay sober. I really liked how the author incorporated that into the story, and showed how previous addicts can get better and have a full life.

This was a solid (not standout, but solid) little supernatural horror story until the random reveal hit, and everything went kinda off the rails. I don’t know how no one told Jason Rekulak that
having a character who was forced to be trans, a child especially, by their atheist liberal parents
for no other reason than adding more shock value to your twist sucks, is
transphobic
, and is weak writing. I wouldn’t put people through this book knowing the author randomly decided to add that in without considering the real world politics it mirrors. Thank god a good Christian girl was able to save her, right?

I am so frustrated by this book!
The good: I'm not one to read entire books in one sitting, but I did with this. The story was compelling, the illustrations were perfectly creepy, and I had no idea what was going to happen in a great way.

The REALLY BAD: The Maxwells are laughably stereotypical. It's like the author listened to a bunch of Alex Jones and was like "yeah, I can make characters on that." Truly ridiculous, pretty shameful.

In summary, it's quite an enjoyable book up until the twist. Then it nosedives.
