I love the black and white drawings in this book. It's lovely line work. I'm not sure this story is really queer, which is why I read it. But I did quite enjoy the story and I'm glad that nobody stuck him. Shame about that bee though.

In my journey to complete #100yearsofbooks I found this one and paused in 1936. A quick read. I children's book. However, I have found, as you may have, that children's books tend to offer the best advice and are quick - the the advice is easily to understand. Ferdinand is one of the those.

Love who you are.

My all time most favorite children's book. I have my original copy from when I was a little girl. Love, love, love, love this book.

My fifth book in my Banned Books Week readathon. This one was recommended to me by Zoe's Human, thank you for the recommendation!
It is about a big bull named Ferdinand who looks strong and buff, but is actually very sweet and peaceloving and just wants to sleep and smell the flowers. He gets taken to the bull fighting, but instead of going against the matadors... he loved smelling flowers.
Somehow I remember the story from somewhere, so I did some searching around and found out there is an animation which I did see when I was a kid!

I enjoyed the book but felt there was an underlying theme behind the whole thing. The image of a bull NOT wanting to celebrate its part in the arena seemed to be a snub at Spain. Read this article in Wikipedia to get a far more interesting overview and an understanding that even children's literature can have political connotations.
