One of the best books about Hekate I have ever read! It's not a book about how we, today, should worship Hekate but a book about how She was worshipped and how Her cult grew and grew throughout the ages, mixing with other traditions until coming to us today as the complex, unique and amazing Goddess She is. I recommend this book to EVERYONE who wishes to learn who Hekate is.

Excellent book for anyone interested in the historical background of the goddess Hekate. The authors quote a lot from ancient (or not so ancient) texts and cover a lot of interesting topics related to Hekate which has also been syncretisated with several other deities over time, as more than one chapter shows. Each chapter is rather short and the style is easy to read. The last 22 pages of the book have an extensive bibliography and a further reading section.

This book is pretty academic, so it isn't a quick read, but there's a lot of information and the authors did the work of digging through dozens of classical texts I'd probably not read to present what's relevant to Hekate.

Very shallow; the book wasn't quite as well-researched as it maybe should have been. For example, they say that Hekate was likely a foreign goddess, but they never give theories about where she actually came from.

It feels like they know they don't have a lot, as their chapters get weirdly specific. Instead of a chapter dedicated to her sacred animals, they have 2 separate chapters, one for each animal they talk about, black dogs and snakes (somehow they completely miss the polecat).

Given how popular Hekate is, you'll likely find a much better, more-researched book dedicated solely to her elsewhere.

There were several claims through the book that I had not encountered elsewhere, but the book is definitely rife with information and has a very in-depth bibliography that I look forward to perusing in the future.

An essential reference for Hekate information.
